Thus if water be evaporated under such a pressure that the boiling point is 100, the latent heat is 1100; if the boiling point be 200, the latent heat will be 1000; if the boiling point be 300, the latent heat will be 900, and so on. 720. It follows from tliis that no matter what be the pressure under which a given quantity of water is converted into steam, the same amount of fuel will be consumed in the operation. 721. Upon the conversion of water into steam, under the pressure of 15 lbs. to the square inch, its volume is increased nearly in the ratio of 1:1700, or since a cubic foot contains 1728 cubic inches, it may be considered with a sufficient amount of accuracy for most practical purposes, that a cubic inch of water evaporated at the ordinary pressure of the atmosphere produces a cubic foot of steam. 722. If water be converted into steam under a greater or less pressure than 15 lbs. to the square inch, the density will be increased or diminished, and the volume consequently increased or diminished. The temperature, however, being also increased or diminished, the increase of density (685) will not be exactly proportional to the increased pressure; but for many purposes a sufficiently accurate approximation of the pressure will be obtained by considering the density as directly proportional, and the volume consequently as inversely proportional to the pressure under which the steam is produced. Thus if water be evaporated under a pressure of 5 lbs. to the square inch, each cubic inch of water evaporated will be converted into about 3 cubic feet of steam; evaporated under 74 lbs. pressure, it will produce about 2 cubic feet of steam; under 30 lbs. pressure, it will produce about half a cubic foot of steam, and so...
